Bhutan’s entry into crypto began as a strategic move amid declining tourism revenues, evolving into a thriving industry. The revealed locations include Thimphu, the Himalayan capital; Trongsa, the ancestral seat of the Wangchuck dynasty; Dagana, nestled in a forested district near a rural school; and the colossal ‘Education City’ mine, marking the site of the failed government project.

Under the reign of Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Bhutan’s monarch, the nation has embraced Bitcoin mining to avert economic challenges. While Bhutanese officials kept these facilities undisclosed, Forbes, through satellite imagery, exposed the world’s largest state-owned mines, featuring mining units, data centers, and power lines connected to hydroelectric plants.

One mine near Dochula Pass, a culturally significant area, served as Bhutan’s pilot location. Construction, completed in late 2022, remains hidden despite its proximity to a busy highway.
