- Buterin has proposed a plan embracing L2 solutions and blobs to scale Ethereum.
- L2 networks need to be more widely adopted and interoperable to create a unified Ethereum ecosystem.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed a plan to scale the Ethereum network. He recommended focusing on layer 2 solutions (L2) and blob scaling. Buterin noted that Ether (ETH) was the central economic driver of the ecosystem. He urged L2 networks to support ETH by burning a portion of fees to ETH as a reward for transacting.
Buterin proposed increasing the blob count to improve transaction capacity. Blobs allow for more transactions processed with lower costs on Ethereum. Ethereum’s sustainability, he stressed, hinges on fusing technical upgrades with economic choices.
Layer-2 Networks Are Key to Ethereum’s Growth
Ethereum’s scalability relies on the Layer 2 networks. With these networks, fees are reduced and throughput is enhanced for users. He noted the necessity for scaling L2 solutions to embrace ever increasing demand.
In addition, he advocated for more interoperability of L2s to improve the ecosystem. With no central location, users are currently facing difficulties navigating the fragmented system. Buterin stated that Ethereum should not feel like many disconnected blockchains but be similar to one great unified platform.
Ecosystem should be able to simplify the interaction between applications and their wallets. Specifically, he highlighted the importance of coordinating efforts between L2 networks. This will not only improve the user and developer experience but also on scalability.
Expanding Blob Scaling to Support Growing Use Cases
Blobs are an important component for scaling Ethereum while remaining decentralized and secure. Buterin outlined current blob usage and plans to improve it in the future. Currently, Ethereum processes 3 blobs per slot which is 384 kilobytes of data per slot.
The upcoming Pectra upgrade plans to double this to 6 blobs per slot. Buterin outlined future goals, including 2D sampling using 128 blobs per slot. The upgrades to Ethereum could significantly boost its transaction capacity and efficiency.
Blobs also contribute to ETH burn rates. He pointed out that bigger blob fees and demand could bring more value to ETH. He cautioned that relying on blobs by itself is not enough. To ensure long-term success, he called for technical improvements as well as economic ones.
