Shiba Inu Kabosu, Famous for the ‘Doge’ Meme, Dies at 18

At the age of 18, Kabosu, the adored Shiba Inu whose iconic image gave rise to the widely shared “Doge” meme and spurred the development of Dogecoin, died peacefully on May 24.

Her owner, Atsuko Sato, broke the sad news and expressed her sincere gratitude for all the years of love and support Kabosu had received. A farewell gathering in honour of Kabosu, affectionately known as “Kabo-chan,” is scheduled for May 26 at Flower Kaori in Narita City.

Kabosu first gained internet fame in 2010 through Sato’s blog photos, particularly one capturing her sceptical yet curious expression that became the face of the “Doge” meme. This meme quickly gained popularity online, and it was typically met with humorous Comic Sans replies.

The picture of Kabosu was selected as the official insignia of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that was first meant to be humorous, back in 2013. Over the years, the well-known digital asset Dogecoin has helped to finance several humanitarian projects, such as campaigns for clean water and the Jamaican bobsled team.
