Eight doctors have come forward to support Sam Bankman-Fried’s appeal. They filed an amicus brief, arguing his autism spectrum disorder and ADHD impacted his ability to communicate during the trial. The doctors believe these challenges may have affected how the jury perceived him, potentially weakening his defense.

Communication Issues in Court

The doctors claim that neurodivergence caused Bankman-Fried to give long and detailed answers. They argue that these lengthy responses negatively influenced the jury’s impression of him.

After warnings from the judge, Bankman-Fried shortened his replies, often answering with just “Yup.” The doctors suggest these clipped responses may have been seen as arrogance or indifference by the jury.

In addition, they point out that Bankman-Fried was denied access to crucial FTX documents and his ADHD medication during the early part of the trial. This, they argue, made it harder for him to stay focused and communicate clearly in court.

Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March. He was convicted of defrauding FTX customers out of $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged he orchestrated a massive fraud scheme through both FTX and Alameda Research. His rise to fame placed him alongside high-profile figures like Bill Clinton and Tom Brady.

Now, the doctors’ support could strengthen Bankman-Fried’s appeal. They argue his neurodivergent conditions played a significant role in his courtroom struggles.

His legal team is pushing for a re-evaluation, using this argument to emphasize the potential impact of his condition on his defense. The case may set important precedents for how the legal system approaches neurodivergence in future cases.
