- Pierre Poilievre was chosen as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
- He said that he wanted Canadians to have more control over their own money.
- He is a great supporter of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.
On Saturday, Pierre Poilievre was elected leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. Pierre is a partisan firebrand who blames Canada’s inflation on Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government and opposes vaccine requirements.
A 43-year-old career politician, Poilievre served in Stephen Harper’s Cabinet as a Minister. While in London, Ontario, Poilievre stated that he desired Canadians to have more control over their own money.
He put cryptocurrencies to the test by using it as payment for shwarma at a local restaurant. Afterward, he told reporters that the shop owner had found a way to beat inflation by “outsmarting” the government.
Earlier in March, Pierre publicly declared support for the use of Bitcoin as a legal tender in the country. In a video posted by the YouTube channel BITCOIN, the then formal shadow minister of Finance and Member of Parliament (MP) for Carleton was seen addressing about 100 people at a local shawarma restaurant in Ontario, which employs a Bitcoin payment system.
“I think it’s great. I mean, people should be able to use the currency they want,” he said in the video. “The government doesn’t have a monopoly on money, and if somebody wants to put their own money into circulation, that’s fantastic.”
At the event, Poilievre also spoke about his experience with using Bitcoin to buy shawarma, saying that it was “fast and easy.”
Poilievre has been a long-time advocate of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. In 2014, he co-sponsored a motion to create a special committee to study digital currencies.
In his new role as leader of the Conservative Party, Poilievre will be tasked with leading the party into the next federal election. And with his strong support for Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, it’s likely that we’ll see more positive policies for the industry from the Conservative Party under his leadership.
