Norway Targets Crypto Mining through Data Center Regulation

  • Norway’s new law targets data centers to curb high-energy crypto mining.
  • The regulations aim to support Norway’s sustainable business goals.
  • This move mirrors similar environmental actions by neighboring Sweden.

Norway is set to tighten its grip on crypto mining operations within its borders by enacting regulations aimed at data centers. In a move reported by local news outlet VG, ministers Karianne Tung and Terje Aasland revealed plans to introduce legislation that will oversee the country’s data center industry for the first time.

The proposed law will mandate registration of data center operators with local regulators, with the primary aim of curbing energy-intensive crypto mining activities. Tung emphasized the necessity of this regulation, stating, “The purpose is to regulate the industry in such a way that we can close the door on the projects we do not want.”

Aasland echoed this sentiment, highlighting concerns over the significant greenhouse gas emissions associated with crypto mining. He emphasized that such operations are not aligned with Norway’s vision for sustainable business practices, stating, “It is associated with large greenhouse-gas emissions and is an example of a type of business we do not want in Norway.”

International Context

Norway’s move follows similar efforts by neighboring countries like Sweden, which has also taken steps to deter crypto miners. Last year, Sweden increased taxes for data centers in a bid to discourage crypto mining activities within its borders.

As the crypto industry continues to evolve, governments worldwide are grappling with the environmental implications of crypto mining. Norway’s latest regulatory efforts signal a proactive stance in addressing these concerns while asserting control over its data center industry.

Norway’s proposed regulations on data centers mark a significant step in the government’s efforts to curb energy-intensive crypto mining activities. With sustainability at the forefront, the country aims to align its business landscape with its environmental goals.
