The proposed law will mandate registration of data center operators with local regulators, with the primary aim of curbing energy-intensive crypto mining activities. Tung emphasized the necessity of this regulation, stating, “The purpose is to regulate the industry in such a way that we can close the door on the projects we do not want.”

Aasland echoed this sentiment, highlighting concerns over the significant greenhouse gas emissions associated with crypto mining. He emphasized that such operations are not aligned with Norway’s vision for sustainable business practices, stating, “It is associated with large greenhouse-gas emissions and is an example of a type of business we do not want in Norway.”
