  • The classes include education in cryptocurrency and financial literacy.
  • The program also offers a crypto kids camp

Block CEO Jack Dorsey and rapper Jay-Z joined forces on Thursday to launch Bitcoin Academy, a program that teaches about cryptocurrency and financial literacy.

Shawn Corey Carter, popularly known as Jay-Z, is a billionaire rapper and entrepreneur who grew up in the Marcy Houses of Brooklyn district.

The official Twitter account of Shawn Carter Foundation, a foundation co-founded by Jay-Z, confirmed via tweet the funding of the education program in Jay-Z’s hometown.

While the Bitcoin academy offers free crypto classes exclusively for Marcy residents, the program also provides online classes. The classes generally educate students about the blockchain and money literacy.

Furthermore, the program also offers a “crypto kids camp,” where participants will have access to a mobile hotspot and a small amount of Bitcoin to cultivate their newly learned skills.

The Bitcoin Academy instructors will be from the educational organization Crypto Blockchain Plug and Black Bitcoin Billionaire, a non-profit organization funded by Block that aims to introduce cryptocurrency to black people.

The classes will be provided twice a week until early September and it comes with a dinner for each student. The program will be initially launched at Marcy Houses but soon to expand to other hoods.

Jay-Z and Dorsey are funding crypto-related projects using their own money over the past few months. Both of them have invested in several blockchain startups, such as Alchemy, and funded a Bitcoin development program in developing countries like Africa and India.
