  • OpenAI’s newsroom account breach is part of ongoing hacks targeting employees and promoting fake cryptocurrency scams.
  • Despite account breaches, OpenAI advances with ChatGPT’s new voice mode, enhancing user interaction capabilities.

Sam Altman’s OpenAI X account was hacked in a targeted cryptocurrency scam, advertising a counterfeit “$OPENAI” token. Hackers used OpenAI’s newsroom account to release fraudulent information, which steered users towards a replica website. The event adds another example to the increasing number of crypto-based scams affecting prominent accounts.

Phishing Scam Promotes Fake Token

The fake tweet from OpenAI’s newsroom account reportedly announced the release of a new blockchain token named “$OPENAI.” Additionally, the post urged OpenAI users to claim the token and offered entry into future beta programs.

The phishing site connected to the tweet mirrored the OpenAI website, luring users into handing over their cryptocurrency wallet credentials. The entry was visible from 6:24 PM ET until approximately an hour later, when it was deleted, possibly reaching many of its followers.

The message included errors, such as misspelling the token as “$OPEANAI.”The lack of a comment section made it difficult for users to recognize the scam. Additionally, these scams are frequently created to obtain user credentials, allowing attackers to open cryptocurrency wallets and resulting in distasteful financial losses and data leaking opportunities.

Ongoing Cybersecurity Challenges at OpenAI

This hacking incident is not the first to target OpenAI’s accounts. Over the past year, other OpenAI employees, including Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki and Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, have also experienced similar account takeovers. These breaches have often been used to promote fake cryptocurrency tokens, highlighting an ongoing security challenge for the company.

OpenAI has admitted to the recent breach and is investigating the incident. The company recommends that its users practice caution and avoid suspicious posts or links that propose cryptocurrency giveaways. A considerable issue is cybersecurity, as scammers aim their efforts at multiple prominent accounts within numerous organizations.

In the face of persistent cybersecurity issues, OpenAI keeps improving its technology and services. The company is working on new ideas, including an upgraded voice mode for ChatGPT that will enhance user experiences. This feature is part of a broader movement by OpenAI to improve accessibility and broaden engagement with AI among users.

The cybersecurity situations emphasize the pressing need for watchfulness since cryptocurrency frauds are increasingly targeting both organizations and individuals. OpenAI’s steps towards addressing these issues are vital as it moves through the continuously changing ecosystem of digital threats.
