Axie Infinity Review: Guide, Features, Gameplay, How to Earn

What Is Axie Infinity?

Axie Infinity is a blockchain-based game that uses the Ethereum network. In a nutshell, it is a game that took its inspiration from Pokémon and Tamagotchi, wherein players own imaginary creatures known as Axies. While these creatures look cute, they are meant for battling and breeding. 

Within the game, players can take their Axies into player versus environment (PvE) adventure mode, wherein they will earn SLPs for clearing the quests. They can also battle other Axies through the player vs player (PvP) arena and gain rank points.

Sky Mavis is the team that developed the game. They started working on the project since about 2018, and they have been working for some time before the game has gained traction across various communities outside the crypto space.

What Is SLP?

SLP stands for Smooth Love Potion. While it sounds like anything but a crypto token, it actually is an ERC-20 token. Players who want to breed their Axies and birth new ones need a specific amount of SLP. The higher the breed count, the more SLP they need to use.

How to Play Axie Infinity

The standard way to start playing Axie Infinity is to own three Axies and form a team out of them. These pets are available on the Axie marketplace for Wrapped Ethereum (wETH). Aspiring players need to have the Ronin wallet extension on their browser to buy Axies from the marketplace.

To prevent any chance of getting into a phishing site, look for the Ronin wallet extension on the Chrome Web Store. You can also do the same for Ethereum wallets.

For those that do not have any wETH, users are recommended to buy from crypto exchanges or from legitimate Ethereum-dedicated wallets that offer direct ETH purchases. Another alternative would be to buy wETH directly from Ronin through Ramp Network. Simply open your Ronin extension, click the Deposit option, and click Continue to purchase.

By the way, these Axies are non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which means that no two Axies can be completely the same. In some cases, some Axies may look identical. However, they will always be of different ID numbers, which may help determine which Axie attacks first during arena fights.

Here is a step-by-step guide to downloading Axie Infinity

1. Visit Axie Infinity’s official website.
2. If you are using a pc or laptop, click the “Play Now” button at the top right corner of the screen. Your pc will begin to download Mavis Hub once you have determined the download location.
3. Run Mavis Hub. You will be asked to create an account through Ronin Wallet, any Ethereum wallet, or an email address and password. Make sure that all are synchronized together for convenience and to prevent any issues later on.
4. Once you have logged on Mavis Hub, you can now play Axie Infinity.

Currently, the only way to play Axie Infinity is to have your own Axies. Once you obtain a minimum of three Axies, you may access the rest of the game.

Axie Infinity Gameplay

Axie Infinity is a duel-type game that uses skills as cards. Basically, one player will battle with either a group of monsters, named chimeras in the game, or against another player. During each round, the game will draw random cards which represent the skills each Axie has. 

Players can choose which skills to use during the round. Each skill has a different effect, which they can utilize to their advantage.

Take note that each card/skill has a specified attack, shield, and energy required. For example, check out the image below.

The top left number (white against a yellow background) represents the energy required to cast the skill. The middle number (white against a red background) shows the damage that the skill inflicts. Meanwhile, the lower number (white against a green background) means the shield that the skill provides. 

Most skills require 1 energy, while others can be used without any. There are also few skills that consume 2 energy. Also, for every Axie, there can be a maximum of four skills that the player can cast every round.

Important: Within the game, there are two types of energies. The first is the energy used to get experience from clearing ruins in Adventure mode, and SLPs when winning in the Arena. The second is the one needed to cast a skill. These energies are mutually exclusive.

Axie Infinity Features

While Axie Infinity is not the first game that uses blockchain technology, it is arguably the most popular today. It has hundreds of thousands of players buying tens of millions of dollars’ worth of Axies every day. It is also the top selling NFT marketplace today.

Since SLP is obtainable within the game, most players find Axie Infinity as a lucrative investment avenue. The average amount of SLP that can be earned daily is 150. By using energy, players can exceed the amount and earn as much as 400 SLP, depending on how much energy they have and how many wins they get.
