Community members from the NFT game hit Axie Infinity spearheaded multiple fundraising efforts to help the Philippines after various regions in the country suffered severe devastations due to typhoon Odette.
Yield Guild Games, an NFT gaming community that is involved in Axie Infinity, is one of the chief proponents of the crypto-based funding. As of December 21, the guild was able to amass over P21 million (around $420,000).
One video showed Jeffrey Zirlin, known as “The Jiho” or simply “Jihoz”, addressing the typhoon relief efforts of the community. Zirlin is the Growth Lead and Co-Founder of Sky Mavis, the game developer behind Axie Infinity.
The Philippines, an archipelago situated in Southeast Asia, was recently devastated by Odette. During the typhoon, a lot of people lost millions of dollars of property on top of casualties. Since the majority of Axie Infinity players are Filipinos, the community expressed deep concern.
On the other hand, some people who aimed at broadcasting the donation drive of the community suffered criticism from others. One even went as far as to question if the motive of others in participating in the donation is to “flex”.
Regardless, the fundraising efforts appear to have been successful, as many have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars.
