ArchiveNode.io Closes, Declares Success in Ethereum Space

ArchiveNode.io, a service offering free access to Ethereum mainnet archive nodes for developers, students, and researchers, has declared its mission accomplished and will be shutting down. After more than three years of operation, the project’s initiator, DeFi Dude, announced the closure on April 4.

An Ethereum Archive Node is a specialized instance of an Ethereum client designed to store an archive of all historical states. These nodes are valuable for querying historical blockchain data, which is typically unavailable on full nodes. Although Archive Nodes do not participate in block validation, they require significant storage capacity.

DeFi Dude explained that the project’s goal was to make archive data accessible to those interested in creating innovative applications but lacked the necessary resources to run their own archive node. At the time the project began, there were no Archive Nodes being operated, and the only option for accessing archive data was to pay Ethereum infrastructure provider Infura a $250 monthly fee.

According to DeFi Dude, the project has achieved its objectives as affordable alternatives have emerged, rendering ArchiveNode.io’s services no longer necessary. The project was never intended to generate profits, but rather to support the Ethereum community by lowering barriers to entry for developers, students, and researchers.

In other news, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, sees a future in which zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (zk-EVMs) are integrated into Ethereum’s layer 1, hence improving the blockchain’s verification procedure. In a recent blog article, Buterin described the possibilities of zk-EVMs, noting that they may be added without compromising decentralization or security.
