• In 2021, Vitalik Buterin burned almost 410 trillion SHIB, which eliminated more than 40% of the tokens in circulation.
  • Buterin donated 50 trillion SHIB before burning most remaining holdings, separating charitable transfers from permanent supply removal.
  • Community burns continued afterward, while Buterin’s 2021 transaction remained the benchmark for Shiba Inu supply reductions.

SHIB burn history centers on Vitalik Buterin’s 2021 destruction of over 410 trillion tokens, permanently changing Shiba Inu’s supply structure after an unsolicited allocation during its early expansion.

SHIBMortal Revisits Buterin’s Historic Decision

SHIBMortal recently revisited the event, calling it the largest reduction in SHIB supply. The post noted Buterin received half the original supply without requesting it. It also referenced his decision to avoid becoming a central power.

The project had transferred roughly half of its initial supply to Buterin. The allocation created an unusually large concentration outside direct project control. Meanwhile, the other half remained locked for Uniswap liquidity.

As of the time of writing, SHIB is trading at $0.00000521 according to coinmarketcap data. The price was in line with its May 2021 high of around $0.00003791. The token had gained nearly 900% during the preceding two weeks.

Major exchanges also began listing SHIB during that rapid market expansion. Binance and Huobi were among the exchanges referenced in contemporary reports. The listings followed increased attention around the token’s “DOGE killer” branding.

Buterin Destroyed Over 410 Trillion Tokens

Buterin moved approximately 90% of his SHIB tokens in May of last year, 2021. The tokens moved to a dead blockchain address, removing them permanently. The destroyed amount exceeded 410 trillion tokens.

CoinDesk reported the holdings were worth roughly $6.7 billion then. The transaction represented more than 40% of SHIB’s original supply. It remains the largest single reduction associated with the token’s history.

Buterin explained that he did not want concentrated influence over SHIB. His stated plan involved burning most holdings and donating the remainder. That decision separated personal control from the project’s wider token distribution.

Before the burn, Buterin donated 50 trillion SHIB to charity. The tokens went to India’s COVID-19 relief effort established by Sandeep Nailwal. Those holdings were transferred rather than permanently destroyed.

Later Burns Continued the Supply Reduction

The distinction between donations and burns remained important for supply accounting. Donated tokens moved to another holder and remained potentially transferable. Burned tokens instead became inaccessible through the blockchain.

Later community activity continued removing SHIB through additional burn transactions. Reporting in April 2026 placed cumulative burns above 410.8 trillion tokens. That amount represented about 41.08% of the original one-quadrillion supply.

Most later transactions remained considerably smaller than Buterin’s historic destruction. Consequently, his 2021 transfer continued serving as a reference point. The event remains closely linked with discussions about SHIB’s supply structure.

Supply reduction does not independently determine future token valuation. Market capitalization, demand, liquidity, and trading activity also affect valuation. Therefore, the historical burn does not establish a guaranteed price outcome.
