OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, is now facing scrutiny from Canada’s privacy commissioner over claims that it has been gathering and utilizing personal information without users’ permission.

On April 4, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) revealed that it initiated the investigation in response to a complaint filed by an unnamed individual. Philippe Dufresne, the Head Privacy Commissioner, emphasized the importance of monitoring AI technology to ensure the protection of Canadian citizens’ privacy rights.

Dufresne stated, “AI technology and its effects on privacy is a priority for my Office […] We need to keep up with – and stay ahead of – fast-moving technological advances, and that is one of my key focus areas.” The OPC has not provided any additional comments or mentioned any potential restrictions on Canadians’ access to ChatGPT.

This investigation in Canada comes amidst growing global concerns over AI and privacy, with countries like Germany, France, Ireland, and Spain considering possible regulatory actions. Notably, Italy recently imposed a temporary ban on ChatGPT, further fueling the debate surrounding the implications of AI technology on privacy.
In other news, YieldTrust.ai faces legal action from Montana, Texas, and Alabama securities regulators who accuse the platform of operating a Ponzi scheme. The government is primarily targeting the company’s allegations regarding YieldBot, its decentralized application (DApp).
