  • Vivienne Tam creates outfits based on NFTs and mahjong designs at NWFW SS23.
  • Claiming that connecting past, present, and future is the key to Web3 success.
  • Her unisex streetwear casuals, denim, and mesh silhouette designs are topped with prints from famous blue chip NFTs.

This week’s New York Fashion SS23 show featured outfits that were sewn, embroidered, and printed with PFPs and avatars of some of the most exemplary blue chip NFTs. New York-based Fashion designer Vivienne Tam aims to create a bridge that will tether the virtual world to real life. Her brand, named after her, is inspired by Chinese culture, design, modern fashion, and east-west fusion.

“Emerging from the world of gamers and young men, a new vocabulary is emerging, rewiring the current fashion landscape as we previously knew it,” the Chinese-born fashion designer specifying the new ‘vocabulary’ as the potential of Web3. She claimed that building a bridge to the future is the key to the success of the Web3 industry.

Tam also emphasizes her SS23 collection as the past, present, and future look of the metaverse. She said:

“The metaverse also needs a physical component and the older generations need the younger ones to help show us new things and new opportunities… I see the Vivienne Tam brand as being the bridge between the two worlds: old world, new world; physical world, virtual world.”

The NFT, crypto, and DAO-inspired garments by Tam were recognized by several members of the community. In fact, the co-founder and executive chair at Animoca Brands Yat Siu posted on Twitter saying he’s honored and humbled that his BoredApeYC #9730 made it to the runway.

Tam was famous for her Asian-inspired feminine looks and unisex clothing. She said the incorporation of NFTs with her “Chinese-ness” and “ideas like the use of mahjong,” are all similar in a way that they’re all about “skill and strategy.”

The New York-based fashion designer’s SS23 collection features a wide range of NFT collections from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, CryptoPunks, CyberKongz, and Awkward Astronauts.
